Redefining A Fallen Icon Of The Bygone Era

The tourists have long deserted this once iconic entertainment island with its 800m long manmade sandy beach. Indeed, the place have been deterioated over a long period with little commercial and retail activities left.

However,  a new group of users have quietly emerged and a new lease of life has gradually taken root –  the local community has returned  to redefine the place.

Nowadays, Odaiba beach has been transformed from a tourist-orientated commercialized development into a layback local hideout. It has become a beach-front retreat for young Tokyo residents to escape the oppressive urban density and crowdedness of the city.

Background:

The 800-meter long Odaiba Beach is manmade and extremely urban in character, it is the only sandy beach to be found in Tokyo City.

The brightly lit Rainbow Bridge has been one of the iconic symbols of Tokyo since it was built in 1993. It offers panoramic views of the Odaiba waterfront, which is beautifully illuminated at night.

The Odaiba Island was developed as a mega-entertainment and shopping district. However, many of its giant malls with make believe icons and fairy-tale images have long been closed down and left deserted until now.
