Hokkaido Winter Landscapes Series: II

Winter Scenery @ Jozankei Onzen

Soaking in the mineral-rich, open-air hot spring bath while gazing at the snowy winter landscape is a relaxing and an unforgettable experience. Although, Jozankei onzen town is famous for its brilliant autumn fall colors. its aesthetic appeal during the winter season has it own delightful characteristics too.

The landscape of Jozankei Onzen is characterized by the meandering Toyoshira River, which winds through the steep cliffs on both sides of the valleys as it passes through the town. The combination of hilly terrains, deep valleys, distant peaks and meandering river in the landscape has created a spatial order that is dynamic and 3-dimensional -- making it a wonderful place to explore scenic vistas and panoramas.

This dynamic spatial quality is further enhanced by the white snowy environment of the winter season. The view possesses a  sense of spatial transparency and depth, as it penetrates throught the naked branches of the trees in the forest and extends further, leads by the extensive snow-covered terrains until it reaches the horizon in the far distant.
